What is a Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fills service?
Lube Stop’s Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Fills service is the replenishment of the diesel exhaust fluid which is a non-hazardous solution made of urea and-ionized water. Its job is to reduce bad emissions in the exhaust and improve fuel efficiency. This fluid is sprayed by the vehicle internal systems into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous nitrogen oxides emissions into harmless nitrogen and water to achieve optimum performance. Keep in mind that this fluid is not a fuel additive and must never come into contact with diesel. It is stored in a separate tank, typically with a blue filler cap. It is required by environmental laws.
If your fluid is dirty or contaminated, it doesn’t circulate as well as it should. That makes it ineffective at its filtering job. So, when filling, ensure nothing gets into your tank other than the DEF itself.

What is diesel exhaust fluid for?
Diesel exhaust fluid is a non-hazardous mixture of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. Urea is a compound in Nitrogen that breaks to ammonia when heated. Diesel exhaust fluid is initially comprised of (NH2)2CO. When injected into the hot exhaust gas, the water evaporates leaving harmless components such as ammonia and isocyanic acid.
So, in these diesel vehicles, the exhaust gas from the engine is routed first through a particulate filter to catch all the soot and ash generated from burning what is a relatively impure fuel. That takes care of the “rolling coal” aspect of old diesel engines that made them so unpopular before the ’90s.
From the particulate filter, the exhaust gas travels past a nozzle which sprays diesel exhaust fluid into the stream of gases. The hot exhaust gas and DEF then enter the catalytic converter where the urea from the DEF and the exhaust gas react with a variety of metallic compounds to convert nitrogen dioxide and monoxide into nitrogen and water. Nitrogen is the primary component of the air we breathe and is harmless to the environment. Water is water.
Often, fluids also contain corrosion inhibitors. This is because exhausts often contain a range of highly corrosive metals such as aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass, or solder.
